The outbreak of war in Ukraine in February 2022 brutally changed the daily life of the artist’s friends and relatives in Poland. Within a few months, this country with 38 million inhabitants became, by far, the first with more than a million war refugees on its soil. Relatives of Damian Noszkowicz focused their lives on helping. They went to the Polish border, hosted refugees in their apartments and even opened bank accounts in France in case the conflict extended to Poland. The perception of the world that Damian Noszkowicz thought he knew was shaken. A new reality was revealed.
Variations refers to variations in music, a technique by which the theme of a performance is almost imperceptibly modified. The melody, rhythm or harmony are repeated in a slightly altered form. Variations is an allegory on the duality of human nature and on that of the events of life.
To sound this duality, the artist recalls the herbaria of the Victorian era which served as a collection of specimens used for the scientific study of the living. Damian Noszkowicz creates his own herbarium with flower petals, but this is a contemporary herbarium of the resurgence of war in Europe. It raises questions rather than answers them. The artist presents two versions of the same petal. Which one is real?
The variation is entrusted to an algorithm developed by the artist. The artificial intelligence modifies the colour of the petal and randomly creates a new version of reality. The artist loses control of events. Is the new version the real one? Is the first one just a projection? Are both true or are they both false? This ambivalent work reflects the questioning of the artist. The variation of the same petal resonates with the first diptychs used by the Church in the 6th century AD, that preserve, once closed, the mysteries of life.

Le déclenchement de la guerre en Ukraine en février 2022 change brutalement la vie quotidienne des amis et des parents de l’artiste en Pologne. En quelques mois, ce pays (38 millions d’habitants) devient, et de loin, le premier pays d’accueil avec plus d’un million de réfugiés sur son sol. Des proches de Damian Noszkowicz focalisent leur vie sur l’aide. Ils vont à la frontière polonaise, mettent à disposition leur appartement, ouvrent même des comptes bancaires en France au cas où le conflit s'étendrait à la Pologne. La perception du monde que Damian Noszkowicz croyait connaître est ébranlée. Une nouvelle réalité est révélée.
Variations fait référence à la variation musicale, technique par laquelle le thème d’une interprétation est presqu’imperceptiblement modifié. La mélodie, le rythme ou l'harmonie, sont répétés sous une forme légèrement altérée. Variations est une allégorie sur la dualité de la nature humaine et sur celle des événements de la vie.
Pour sonder cette dualité, l’artiste se souvient des herbiers de l'époque victorienne qui servaient de collection de spécimens utilisés pour l'étude scientifique du vivant. Damian Noszkowicz crée son propre herbier avec des pétales de fleurs mais c’est un herbier contemporain du retour de la guerre en Europe. Il soulève des questions plutôt qu’il n’y répond. L’artiste présente deux versions d’un même pétale. Lequel est le vrai?
La variation est confiée à un algorithme mis au point par l’artiste. L’intelligence artificielle modifie la couleur du pétale et crée de façon aléatoire une nouvelle réalité. L’artiste perd le contrôle des événements. La nouvelle version est-elle la vraie? La première est-elle juste une projection? Les deux sont-elles vraies ou les deux sont-elles fausses? L’œuvre ambivalente reflète le questionnement de l’artiste. Cette variation du même pétale résonne avec les premiers diptyques utilisés par l’Église au VIème siècle après J.C. Diptyques qui conservent, une fois refermés, les mystères de la vie.
